Picture: Maori storytelling through string figures.
"I let them choose three characters: an animal, a person, and a supernatural being, such as a ghost or a monster. Then, I make up a story, filling it with secondary characters from my childhood, selecting actual friends from the past, and inventing new friends who begin to take on a new life as I’m weaving them through the story. I tell them stories of searches and of losses, of encounters and of separations, of adventures and of blunders, and of good times and bad times."
